Consulting/ IT Consulting

This year saw a phenomenal increase in offers from consulting companies at SPJIMR. 19% of the batch was placed in leading Consulting firms.

The consulting bandwagon led by McKinsey and Co. included Arthur D’Little, Accenture Business Consulting (ABC), Deloitte,Ernst and Young, KPMG, PwC, CEB and TSMG. Deloitte picked up maximum number of students for their various divisions. Accenture for the first time gave offers for the Global Talent and Innovation Network team. IT consulting was offered by Cognizant Business Consulting (CBC) and Capgemini.

Other offers included profiles like Strategic Consulting, Operations consulting and Financial Advisory.

Finance

The major finance players on the campus included JP Morgan, IIFL, Standard Chartered, Citi Bank, Deutsche Bank, ICICI Bank, Edelweiss, ICRA, Avista Advisory , SBI Caps, HSBC , Yes Bank, Axis Bank etc. Offers were received across a plethora of functions ranging fromInvestment Banking , Corporate Banking, Institutional Equities , Equity Research , Credit Rating, Credit Risk, Treasury , Project Finance and Corporate Finance. The campus also saw participation from Multinational firms like Thomson Reuters making exclusive offers for their Global Business Graduate Program. 21.35% of the batch got offers in the Financial Services and Banking sector

IT/ITes

IT companies like Microsoft, HCL Technologies and IBM offered Sales roles. Corporate IT roles were offered from business giants like General Electric, Proctor and Gamble and Citibank. Other IT majors included TCS, Wipro, Polaris, HP, Winshuttle, i-Gate etc.

Marketing and Operations

Marketing, Sales and Supply chain roles were made by FMCG majors including Procter & Gamble, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Johnson & Johnson, Dabur, Asian Paints, Nestle, Marico, Britannia, Nivea and Wipro Consumer.

For the first time HUL picked up a lateral hire from campus for the supply chain division. This placement season, also had participation from companies like Bharti Airtel, Philips, Novartis, CEAT and Titan offering our students niche roles across diverse sectors.

Companies like 3M, Cummins also visited the campus for the first time offering roles for the students with operation majors. 23% of the batch got offers from FMCG majors

BITSAT 2011 Entrance Exam Notification:
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani is an all India Institution declared as Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Admissions to all the Integrated First Degree programmes of BITS, Pilani, at Pilani campus, Goa campus, and Hyderabad Campus for the academic year 2011-12 will be made on the basis of a Computer based Online Test conducted by BITS, Pilani. This test will be referred to as ‘BITS Admission Test – 2011’, in short as BITSAT-2011 hereafter in this document.
Eligibility:
For admission to any of the above Integrated First Degree Programmes, candidates should have passed the 12^th class examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Further the candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects in 12^th examination, at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects and should have adequate proficiency in English.
Only Students who are appearing for 12^th examination in 2011 or who have passed 12^th Examination in 2010 are eligible to appear in the BITSAT-2011 test. If a candidate has taken more than one attempt in 12^th class or its equivalent, only his latest performance is considered, provided this attempt has been for the full component of subjects/courses prescribed. Students who have passed 12^th examination in 2009 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in BITSAT-2011. Students who are presently studying in BITS at any of its campuses are not eligible to appear in BITSAT-2011
Admissions will be made purely on merit. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtained by the candidate in the BITSAT-2011. However, their eligibility for admission is subject to fulfilling the requirement of minimum marks in 12^th examination, as mentioned above.
Direct Admission to Board Toppers:
In the past, admission process of the Institute always ensured guaranteed admission to all the students who obtained first ranks in their respective board examinations. This has given a very vital input of highly meritorious students from all over India. First rank students of all the central and state boards in India for the year 2011 will be given direct admission to the program of their choice, irrespective of their BITSAT-2011 score as per the eligibility criteria mentioned above. BITSAT 2011 Test:
It is a 3 hour test, offered to candidates on computer at dedicated centers in different cities in India and at the Dubai campus. What is Benchmarking?

Data Interpretation consists of three sections viz. Data Interpretation, Data Sufficiency and Reasoning. It is easily the most scoring section of any exam- if the fundamentals are in place.

Data Interpretation (D.I.) : contains information presented in the form of Bar graphs, Line Graphs, Pie Charts, Tables, Histograms etc. The student is required to analyze the information provided and supply the answer to asked queries related to the data given. Students who are good at heavy mental calculation are at an advantage as it is one of the keys for doing well in this section. This section tests the students' skills in Percentage calculation, Profit and Loss Analysis, and Ratio Proportion.

Data Sufficiency: is a section where a statement is given and with it are provided two options which could hold the key to the answer. The student is required to independently analyze both the answer keys and see from which the answer can be derived. The student has to tick one of the five options for the answer.

• If answer can be derived from Answer key A- then answer is A.

• If answer can be derived from Answer key B- then answer is B.

• If answer can be derived from both A & B independently- then answer will be C.

• If answer can be derived from a combination of A & B- then answer is D.

• If answer cannot be derived from any of the options, then the answer is E.

Imp: Many times students get confused when the solution does yield an answer with both the answer keys but the answer is different in both the cases. In such a scenario, C would be the correct option is the right one as long as both the options provide unique answers (i.e. it can't be -2 or +2, it has to be either).

Reasoning: as a section can be tackled very well if the mental calculation is fast. There are broadly three types of reasoning questions: Linear, Circular and Tabular.

Language is not a cultural artifact that we learn the way we learn to tell

time or how the federal government works. Instead, it is a distinct

piece of the biological makeup of our brains. Language is a complex,

specialized skill, which develops in the child spontaneously, without

conscious effort or formal instruction, is deployed without awareness of

its underlying logic, is qualitatively the same in every individual, and is

distinct from more general abilities to process information or behave

intelligently. For these reasons some cognitive scientists have described

language as a psychological faculty, a mental organ, a neural system,

and a computational module. But I prefer the admittedly quaint term

"instinct". It conveys the idea that people know how to talk in more or

less the sense that spiders know how to spin webs. Web spinning was not

invented by some unsung spider genius and does not depend on having

had the right education or on having an aptitude for architecture or the

construction trades. Rather, spiders spin spider webs because they have

spider brains, which give them the urge to spin and the competence to

succeed. Although there are differences between webs and words, I

will encourage you to see language in this way, for it helps to make sense

of the phenomena we will explore.

Thinking of language as an instinct inverts the popular wisdom, especially

as it has been passed down in the canon of the humanities and social

sciences. Language is no more a cultural invention than is upright posture.

It is not a manifestation of a general capacity to use symbols: a three year old,

we shall see, is a grammatical genius, but is quite incompetent at the

visual arts, religious iconography, traffic signs, and the other staples of

the semiotics curriculum. Though language is a magnificent ability

unique to Homo sapiens among living species, it does not call for

sequestering the study of humans from the domain of biology, for a

magnificent ability unique to a particular living species is far from

unique in the animal kingdom. Some kinds of bats home in on flying

insects using Doppler sonar. Some kinds of migratory birds navigate

thousands of miles by calibrating the positions of the constellations

against the time of day and year. In nature's talent show, we are simply

a species of primate with our own act, a knack for communicating

information about who did what to whom by modulating the sounds

we make when we exhale.

Once you begin to look at language not as the ineffable essence of

human uniqueness but as a biological adaptation to communicate

information, it is no longer as tempting to see language as an insidious

shaper of thought, and, we shall see, it is not. Moreover, seeing language

as one of nature's engineering marvels an organ with "that perfection

of structure and co adaptation which justly excites our admiration," in

Darwin's words gives us a new respect for your ordinary Joe and the

Much maligned English language (or any language). The complexity of

language, from the scientist's point of view, is part of our biological

birthright; it is not something that parents teach their children or

something that must be elaborated in school as Oscar Wilde said,

"Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to

time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught." A preschooler's

tacit knowledge of grammar is more sophisticated than the thickest

style manual or the most state of the art computer language system,

and the same applies to all healthy human beings, even the notorious

syntax fracturing professional athlete and the, you know, like,

inarticulate teenage skateboarder. Finally, since language is the product

of a well engineered biological instinct, we shall see that it is not the nutty

barrel of monkeys that entertainer columnists make it out to be.

The right way to start preparing for CAT

People often go to soothsayers and astrologers to find the most opportune time to embark upon a project of importance. Whether or not that helps is a matter of personal belief. We, however, have some timely advice for those preparing for CAT this year. Most serious CAT aspirants will give anything to find out the perfect moment to start preparing for the exam. We spoke to Vaishnu Dass, Quant faculty at TCY and sought his expert views.

Vaishnu is an authority on Quant preparation and gives coaching for CAT, GRE & GMAT. Faculty at TCY, he has been coaching aspirants for these exams for the last 14 years.

Is there a 'magic number' of hours of coaching that one should get while preparing for Quant part of CAT?

There is no 'magic number' of hours as such. Nevertheless, there are an optimum number of hours of classroom lectures that are required. From my experience of over 14 years, I feel that at least 84 hours must be allocated for Quant in order to excel in it.

How do you divide these hours? How many hours a day? How many days a week?
I would divide CAT test prep into three distinct categories. Rush Hour, Optimum and Ideal. Let's talk about 'Rush Hour' first.

If MBA is not of paramount importance, focus fully on your current academic pursuit. If MBA is your ultimate goal, learn to keep your focus and prioritise accordingly.

Sums are an important feature in the syllabus of CBSE and ICSE. By following certain steps, the working of sums in these subjects can be made easy and interesting.

Steps to follow while doing calculations in Physics and Chemistry:

1) First write the data that is given. This will enable the student to be aware of the formula, the student has to use in solving the sum.
2) Then write the formula that can be used to solve the sum.
3) It is easier to work with fraction numbers than decimals. So, convert the decimal numbers into fraction numbers, in powers of ten and after arriving at the answer, convert the fraction numbers into corresponding decimal numbers corrected up to two decimal places.

Students following the above steps while doing sums in physics and chemistry will find better comfort level.
Not only sums, but there are other interesting features in these two subjects, Physics and Chemistry.
While working with sums in Mole Concept and Stoichiometry in chemistry, the students can follow certain methods to arrive at the correct solution.

1) First write the chemical equation and balance it, by making the number of atoms of each element the same on the reactants side and the products side.
2) Always remember that One molecule of any compound weighs the sum total of atomic weights of the molecule and One mole of any gas occupies a volume of 22.4 litres or 22,400 ml or 22,400 cubic cm at standard temperature and pressure .
3) While finding the molecular formula, the student has to remember

Molecular formula = n X Empirical formula and
The value of    n       = Molecular weight/Empirical Formula weight.
Sometimes, the molecular weight may not be provided in the sum, instead, Vapor density would have been provided. In such cases, use the formula
Molecular Weight = 2 X Vapour density.

In Physics, while doing sums, Correct Units have to be mentioned in the final answer.
While working the sums, necessary conversions have to be made so that the Units of all the components are in the same, either in S.I or C.G.S. units.

For example, if the Distance is in Kilometers, then the unit of speed has to be in Kilometer per Hour. If the unit of speed is provided in the sum as Meters per second, then it can be converted into Kilometers per hour by multiplying with 18/5. If the distance is in meters, speed in Kilometers per hour, then the speed can be converted into meters per second by multiplying with 5/18
1) The Formula has to be written first
2) Next, the units of the individual component in the formula have to be mentioned.
3) After necessary reductions, the final unit will be available.

For example   Speed = Distance in meters/time in seconds or
Distance in kilometers and time in hours, then
Speed = meters/second or Kilometers/hour
so the unit of speed is meter per second or kilometer /hour. = m/sec or km/hour
V^2 – u^2 /a = 2S   (v=final velocity, u = initial velocity, a = acceleration and S = (distance) (meters per second) ^2 – (Meters per second) ^2/ Meters per second square = meters ^2 X Seconds ^2/metres per seconds ^2 = Meters which is the unit of distance.

So writing the Formula for any sum is important to make the sum interesting and easy.
In the branch of organic chemistry, to identify Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes,
1) First write the number of carbon atoms in the unknown Hydrocarbon and call it   n
2) Then write the number of hydrogen atoms in multiples of   n.
3) The general formula for Alkane is CnH2n+2; Alkene is CnH2n; Alkyne is CnH2n-2. By substituting the values of   n, the student can identify the unknown Hydrocarbon.

We, however, have some timely advice for those preparing for CAT this year. Most serious CAT aspirants will give anything to find out the perfect moment to start preparing for the exam. We spoke to Vaishnu Dass, Quant faculty at TCY and sought his expert views.

Is there a ‘magic number’ of hours of coaching that one should get while preparing for Quant part of CAT?
There is no ‘magic number’ of hours as such. Nevertheless, there are an optimum number of hours of classroom lectures that are required. From my experience of over 14 years, I feel that at least 84 hours must be allocated for Quant in order to excel in it.

How do you divide these hours? How many hours a day? How many days a week?
I would divide CAT test prep into three distinct categories. Rush Hour, Optimum and Ideal. Let’s talk about ‘Rush Hour’ first.

Since I attended so many GD, GT and PIs, it would not be possible for me to narrate all the experiences.

However, I would like to share a few things which are very important for any college.

1) Be honest. Never bluff.

2) If you are a fresher, be prepared for technical questions like – ur final year project, ur seminar, ur training, ur favorite subject, etc

3) If you have work-ex, be prepared for questions related to business of ur company like – who were ur clients, what was the business of the clients, ur company’s hierarchy, sales and turnover of ur company, number of employees, etc.

4) Interview is a pre-planned game. Pls understand this. Go prepared with answers for all the question like – introduce urself, why MBA, why this particular college, ur hobbies, ur strengths, weakness, career goals, etc.

5) For every question, ur answer shud be logical and if the interviewer asks, u shud be able to give suitable examples to justify wat u have said.

6) Be prepared for cross-questions.

7) Smile wen u enter the room.

Come formally dressed. Proper haircut and clean shaven. It is very important. .

9) Remain updated about all GK and current affairs stuff. Read morning’s newspaper on the day of interview.

10) Always have a stand and have ur own opinion about whatever is asked to u, esp. in the case of debatable issues and current affairs.

11) Never talk about placements in the interview. Never compare any college.

12) Do a lot of research about the college before attending its interview. It helps u to speak confidently in the interview wen asked for questions related to why mba and why this college, etc.

13) Be thorough about ur hobbies. It is very much possible that ur entire interview can go discussing ur hobbies. If u don’t know all the details, say, about ur favourite game, u are out. It gives a very bad impression.

You are likely to face GDs at least on two occasions – first when you are seeking admission to a PG program, and again when you are seeking that dream job. It pains me to say this. Over all these years, I haven’t found a qualitative difference between the two (With some exceptions of course.)

The purpose of a GD is primarily two-fold: to test your communication skills and to test how well you will gel in a team environment. When you are part of an organization, it goes without saying that you have to interact with others – the members could be from your domain or other domains.

Organizations today do not want brilliant loners – they would rather settle for someone who is above average but who can contribute to a team. Of all the soft skills that you need as managers, effective communication would be somewhere at the top of the list.

The problem in the real world is that a GD is seen as a battle, one in which lung power is the weapon. This apart, many myths surround the concept of a GD. The first to speak is seen as a leader. The last to speak is likely to be rejected. You need to get these myths out of your mind.

GDs come in a variety of forms. They can be on a topic of contemporary relevance – for example, India’s Performance in the World T20 Cup. They can be historical – the formation of states on linguistic basis and the price we are paying for it. They can be controversial – We are a soft state when it comes to terror. Or it can be abstract – red and blue.

Irrespective of the nature of the topic, you would do well to remember the following:

1. Stay calm and composed; it doesn’t pay to shout at anyone or vehemently disagree.
2. If you have to disagree, do so with grace.
3. Instead of bringing in too many viewpoints, focus on one or two and try to arrive at a conclusion.
4. Demonstrate your listening skills as well as your tolerance of a different perspective.
5. Even if you are the last one to speak, treat it as an opportunity to summarize with precision what has been discussed. End the GD on a positive, optimistic, and cheerful note.

Youngsters come to me after a GD and have the usual complaints – I spoke the best, contributed the maximum number of points and yet I was not selected. Then there is the eternal dilemma between being aggressive and being quietly assertive. I can very well understand the frustration that creeps in particularly when you seem to have done well and still do not make it through. I have just two observations to make:
1. The person judging you is not God. That person is as fallible as anyone else. Moreover, whether you did well or not is in the eyes of the recruiter – not our own.
2. Assuming you don’t make it, it is not the end of the world. Where possible, and in a polite manner, try to get feedback. What are the areas you need to improve? Then start working on those areas.
Like many other aspects (Quality, Excellence, Perfection), life too is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the journey even as you crave to reach the destination

The basic idea of a timed test is that you have to work and answer under the constraint of time. Hence, a simple step-by-step algorithmic method of solving a question would only waste your time and put you at a disadvantage. What is required is a set of unconventional tools and methods of problem-solving, apart from the commonsense approach.

A crash course at leading institutes like FIITJEE; Akash; Bansal Tutorials, Kota; Sachdeva; Brilliant Tutorials would have given you ample exposure to the types of questions expected. The internet is full of AIEEE 2009 solutions for most of the previous years’ AIEEE Papers. It would really help if you can take some free online tests in simulated time or download a few AIEEE Papers and do them as timed tests.

PRE EXAM STRATEGIES

Tip-1: Relax

This is not the time to panic; this is the time to consolidate your preparation and be confident. This section must be done in 45 minutes.
If you follow this timeframe in the actual exam, you would still be left with a comfortable cushion time of 15 minutes.

IN-EXAM STRATEGIES
1. Always transfer your answers to the ovals, five at a time. This would reduce the frequent and wasteful back and forth shuttling between the Question Paper and the Answer Sheet, during the exam.

2. Proceed by the process of elimination (POE). Eliminating improbable options will help zero-in on the correct answers. This strategy would also help reduce the probability of errors while you make intelligent guesses.

3. Guesstimate your calculations. For example, you can easily figure out that the product of 302 and 402 would be slightly greater than 120000 (the product of 300 and 400). You may pick your choice accordingly.

The astonishing fact, however, is that people with fair skill level and good knowledge of grammar also sometimes fail to score well or communicate effectively when it comes to formal writing. What they fail to consider, perhaps, is that effective writing is much more than an unstructured expression of creative ideas, and it goes well beyond usage of rich vocabulary and correct grammar.

Think before you speak, they say. Let us modify it to “think before you write”. A methodical approach towards writing results in masterpieces and makes the write-up effective and cohesive in content.

The first step, therefore, towards creative and effective writing is brainstorming for ideas pertaining to the topic or the issue on hand. The ideas need not “all” be scholarly. Let the “wild” ones also be jotted down, to start with. Screening will come later. And if it is an opinion based topic, let the ideas be jotted down separately on both sides of the divide. It does not mean that we have to contradict ourselves. Even if we hold a certain opinion, don’t we need to know the logic behind the diagonally opposite view? We might have to acknowledge our opponents, acknowledge their logic and counter it by our riposte.

The next step involves the screening; segregating the grain from the chaff. Only the best from the inspired ideas need be chosen and put in a descending order of relevance or effectiveness. By now we know what we need to discuss in how many different paragraphs. Mind you these are only the body paragraphs. We haven’t talked about the head (introduction) or the foot (conclusion) as yet.

If we have to describe the beauty of, say, a woman, what do we concentrate on, first and foremost? The face, of course! First of all it is the face that will attract attention. The same holds true for your write up. Give it an attractive face (introduction), scintillating enough to win the fancy of the reader’s eyes and mind. Well begun is half done! Let the introductory lines attract and hold the attention of the reader. Make them idiomatic if you can. Lot more thought ought to go into the phrasing of introductory lines than into the phrasing (language) of the body paragraphs or the conclusion. Perhaps we could give finishing touches to the introductory lines only after completing the rest of the write-up, by which time we are a little wiser about the topic under discussion.

Something penned down with just plain ideas often results in monotony, regardless of how good or effective the content is. A salad without dressing or a hotdog without mustard is not simply worth it. Similarly a write-up that lacks impressive references, quotes, examples fails to catch the interest of readers. Quotes, phrases, idioms etc. add to the appeal of writings and thereby increase the weight of the ideas too. Let the ideas be supported with relevant examples from the current scenario, examples that your target audience (readership) may relate to. Beware! Examples are meant to support your ideas; they are not your ideas. So, let your write-up not be cluttered with examples. Quotes, when used in the beginning or towards the ending of a write-up, work like cherry on the cake. Idioms, phrases and quotes also are a layman’s way of conveying ideas and thoughts. But once again emphasis should be laid on how much and in what manner. English spellings are important only as far as they don’t hinder the reader’s comprehension of the text.

And now a little word about the tail, the conclusion. Let it not be abrupt. Let it summarize and restate in brief the thrust of your argument and let it invite your readers to exercise their minds on the ideas presented.

So next time when you pick up the pen to write an English essay or a blog, thou shall not find yourself in a soup as to what, how, where to write. In other words you will be in a better position to write better English. Always remember that an easy reading has a hard writing effort behind it. Preliminary exam consists of two papers i.e.

Each paper is of two hour duration. The course content of the syllabi for the optional subjects is at the degree level. This is only for selection to the Mains and not to be taken into consideration for the Mains ranking.

If, say, Quantitative Ability is tough and the other two sections are comparatively easy, your changed strategy may look something like:
~ Scanning: 3-4 minutes
~ Quantitative Ability: 45-50 minutes

~ Verbal Ability: 30-35 minutes
By all means, attempt your favourite section first.
Those who have taken CAT, though, will advise you never to attempt Quantitative Ability in the end. QA utilises your core fundamentals and formulae; sometimes, they are difficult to recall under the twin pressures of time and mental fatigue.
The other two sections are primarily practise-based.

~ Once you are done with the Data Sufficiency questions, attempt single graph questions followed by the double graph questions.
~ Questions based on logical games and long tables are generally attempted last.

CAT also features speed breaker questions. Beware of them.
